Phillies Must Ace on Kyle Schwarber Contract Extension After Alex Cora’s Remarks originally appeared on Athlon Sports.
Kyle Schwarber has noted multiple times that he’d like to stay with the Philadelphia Phillies. However, until the front office gets something done, the likelier outcome is that he’ll hit the free agency market at the end of the season and have a real opportunity to get himself paid.
The Phillies aren’t cheap, so it isn’t a fair point to make regarding whether he actually leaves one day, but there are other reasons to consider the move.
For one, if the Phillies don’t win a World Series or come close this year, how much longer can the front office allow this current core to stay intact? Ultimately, it wouldn’t be Schwarber’s fault, more than likely, if they don’t win a World Series, but it’s also fair to wonder what the plan would be if they don’t.
And unfortunately for the Phillies, many teams around Major League Baseball will have an interest in him. When speaking about it, Boston Red Sox skipper Alex Cora even admitted that he’s intrigued by his free agency, according to Rob Bradford of Audacy.
“Alex Cora, before the game, when asked if he was intrigued by how Kyle Schwarber’s free agency was going to go: ‘Very. Very intrigued.’ How intrigued? ‘Very.’”
Schwarber once played for the Red Sox and swung the bat at a very high level during his time in Boston. He posted an impressive 155 OPS+ during his 41 games after being traded by the Washington Nationals at the deadline to the Red Sox.
During his time in Philadelphia, he’s been among the top power hitters in baseball, hitting at least 38 home runs in each of his first three seasons. In his fourth and potentially final season, Schwarber has 33 home runs in just 101 games.
