Phillies Could Trade for Breakout Marlins’ Outfielder Kyle Stowers

The Philadelphia Phillies were having a remarkable year before a few glaring weaknesses began eating away at their record. Today, both their outfield and bullpen remain high-priority concerns.

Of the Phillies’ outfielders, only Nick Castellanos is posting quality numbers at the plate. Max Kepler, Johan Rojas, and Brandon Marsh (currently injured) all own OPS figures below .690. However, of the four, Castellanos has the lowest WAR value at -0.2 thanks to his lackluster defense. Marsh and Rojas are posting 0.3 WAR while Kepler stands at 0.2 (WAR values from FanGraphs). The fact of the matter is that none of these numbers are pretty, which is why the Phillies are in the market for another outfielder.

There are some decent options on the outfield market this time around, but few have done what Kyle Stowers is doing this season. Acquired by the Marlins last season, Stowers has broken out to the tune of a .272/.339/.465 slash line with 10 home runs. His WAR value of 1.0, while not amazing, still trounces what the Phillies are getting from their other outfielders. And with his left-handed bat in Philadelphia, we can likely expect more home runs from him. Stowers has been among the elite in hard-contact, barrels percentage, and bat speed this year.

In an article from The Athletic, MLB insider and former GM Jim Bowden lists Stowers as one of only two players the Marlins would consider trading. He wrote this of Miami’s trade plans:

“The Marlins will listen to inquiries on their corner outfielders this summer since teams like the Padres and Royals might overpay for Kyle Stowers or Jesús Sánchez.”

Stowers is under club control through 2030 and won’t be eligible for arbitration until 2027. At a low price of $768.2 K this year and with plenty of club control, Stowers will likely be a hot commodity at the trade deadline.
