Phillies claim Tim Mayza for the stretch run

Today is the deadline to add players to the roster if a team wants to have them as an option for the playoffs. The Phillies were active with this and added a bullpen piece that will help.

It’s an interesting choice to make since Mayza is still hurt, but there are some possibilities here. For his career, Mayza has been tough on left handed hitters, holding them to a .215/.266/.306 line over the course of a few seasons. For the sake of the kids, don’t look at what right handed hitters do, but that wouldn’t be his job. With Jose Alvarado out for the potential October run, the team would like to have another option that would help with left handed hitters, so Mayza is that option.

The team currently has a full 40-man roster, but Zack Wheeler hasn’t been placed on the 60-day injured list, which doing so would open up that spot. It’s another arm to help down the stretch.
