Panthers 2025 training camp tracker: Top takeaways and observations from Day 7

The Carolina Panthers amped up the intensity quite a bit for their seventh outing of training camp.

Here are the top takeaways and observations from Wednesday’s practice . . .

Turning it up

Today’s session featured some competitive one-on-battles between the wideouts and defensive backs as well as a contentious series of 11-on-11 drills between the offense and defense.

Head coach Dave Canales summed up the heated atmosphere by referencing two plays.

“Jaycee [Horn] made beautiful interception today then he punted the ball. We can’t do that,” Canales told reporters. “So then, what happens? JT [Ja’Tavion Sanders] catches a great pass and spins it in front of the defense. These are penalties. We wanna be a smart football team. We can’t have those things. Let a dominant play be dominant. Let it speak for itself.

“So, I addressed those things. But I also kinda like it. I like the edge, I like the back and forth. But we gotta be smart.”

The offense appeared to have won the day.

‘That’s nasty’

Quarterback Bryce Young, in what was his best showing of the summer thus far, led that charge with a number of filthy throws on the morning.

Canales was asked why he thought Young was so effective.

“I mean, guys just being where they’re supposed to be,” he replied. “We’re still working through some timing things, some void throws, different little tweaks to routes. But the guys are being where they’re supposed to be when they’re supposed to be there. That’s first and foremost. If you’re gonna be a skill player in the pass game, be where you’re supposed to be so Bryce can count on that.

“And I just love the way that it goes back and forth. Offense, defense, offense, defense. And the guys each making plays and battling and competing every down. So it was the competitive environment that’s happening out here it’s great, it’s special. I love where we’re headed.”

Growing up

Canales also talked about the progress of rookie wideout Tetairoa McMillan, who had himself quite a performance as well.

“Just showing a lot of confidence and belief,” Canales said of the eighth overall pick. “He’s had some pretty bad plays throughout camp and he’s had some excellent plays. When you have a guy, he’s teaching me stuff about him that I don’t know, just looking at his character. When guys bounce back quickly, it speaks to their confidence. They know they’re good, ‘I’ll do it again, I’ll be good again.’ And that’s really powerful self-talk.”

McMillan, who made a highlight-reel catch against starting cornerback Mike Jackson on Monday, added a few more eye-opening grabs to his body of work for the summer.
