Panthers 2025 training camp tracker: Top takeaways and observations from Day 6

The Carolina Panthers took it a little easy on Tuesday, leaving the pads behind following a heated session from the morning prior. But one player in particular still turned it up.

Here are the top takeaways and observations from the sixth outing of training camp . . .

Swap-out at wideout

The Panthers announced another move before practice, as they signed wideout Ja’seem Reed. Reed, who worked out for the team on Monday, amassed 77 catches for 1,052 yards and 12 touchdowns at the University of San Diego in 2024.

To make room for the undrafted rookie, Carolina released fellow receiver Dan Chisena. The sixth-year veteran appeared in six games for the Panthers last season, with 81 of his 100 snaps coming on special teams.

Hog molly down

Third-year guard Chandler Zavala did not participate today due to a knee injury.

Head coach Dave Canales offered up a few details on the setback.

“It has to do with his patellar tendon,” Canales told reporters. “And thank God it was not a full patellar tendon rupture. But there’s an injury there, so it’s something we’re gonna have to rehab with him. But we’re gonna take it week to week and kinda see if we can get him back out there to work this camp.”

Zavala sustained a knee injury in Week 12 of his rookie campaign. He was placed on season-ending injured reserve as a result.

Canales mentioned Ja’Tyre Carter and Jarrett Kingston as a few linemen who should receive some extra opportunities in Zavala’s absence.

Stepping up

Cornerback Shemar Bartholomew had himself a day. During the 11-on-11 portion of practice, the second-year defender picked off quarterback Bryce Young and broke up a deep ball intended for wide receiver Jalen Coker.

Canales would praise Bartholomew for his outing.

“He had a really good spring,” Canales said. “Came into camp and has been steady. But today, I think, was a big day for him. It was a big . . . just kinda challenging him to make the play on the ball. You’re in the right spot, have the confidence to go make the play. He did that today and came up with one.”

Bartholomew could factor into a Panthers secondary that remains rather light on depth. He’s currently one of the favorites to back up outside starting corners Jaycee Horn and Mike Jackson.
