Padres-Guardians Steven Kwan Trade Facing One Issue

Ahead of Thursday’s MLB Trade Deadline, the San Diego Padres have been one of the biggest teams to keep an eye on. Most notably, they acquired pitchers Mason Miller and JP Sears from the Athletics for Leodalis De Vries, Braden Nett, Henry Báez, and Eduarniel Nuñez.

Additionally, San Diego has been linked to numerous other players around the majors, most notably Boston Red Sox outfielder Jarren Duran and Cleveland Guardians outfielder Steven Kwan.

On Thursday, ESPN’s Buster Olney reported that the Padres are still pursuing both players and are expected to land one of them by the deadline.

“The Padres have had extensive talks with the Red Sox about Jarren Duran — the Red Sox keep saying no — and with the Guardians about Steven Kwan. Some rival execs fully expect the Padres to land one of these two by day’s end,” Olney wrote on X.

As San Diego aims for a late-season push to further establish themselves as legitimate contenders, it makes sense for them to be so active on the trade market. However, not only have they reportedly constantly been rejected in talks for Duran, but their pursuit of Kwan may have taken a massive hit as well.

According to Dennis Lin of The Athletic, Cleveland asked for De Vries “and more.” Given that the Padres have already traded him, that will prove to be a big issue for them in their pursuit of the two-time All-Star.

“The Guardians’ ask for Steven Kwan included Leo De Vries and more,” Lin wrote on X.

With the trade deadline only a few hours away, it will be worth monitoring the Padres’ activity. It seems that they are adamant about acquiring Duran or Kwan. However, whether a deal will come to fruition remains to be seen.
