Packers Hall of Famer Antonio Freeman's son, Alex Freeman, stars for USMNT during CONCACAF Gold Cup

Antonio Freeman provided Green Bay Packers fans with many electric moments on the football field during his NFL career, including on the biggest stages.

Freeman’s son, Alex Freeman, plays the other kind of football. And as he’s at the start of his professional soccer career, Freeman is already providing fans with his own electric moments, also on the biggest stages.

He was at the center of the United States Men’s National Team’s 4-3 penalty kicks victory over Costa Rica in the quarterfinals of the 2025 CONCACAF Gold Cup on June 29.

Alex Freeman made one of the team’s four penalty kick goals to help send USMNT to the semifinal round on July 2.

Who is Antonio Freeman’s son, Alex Freeman?

Alex Freeman is a soccer player whose future in the game appears as bright as his dad’s was playing football when he was a young player with the Packers.

The 20-year-old Freeman plays for Orlando City of Major League Soccer.

He played in his first game for Orlando City while he was 18 years old in 2023. And his star has continued to grow over the last two years. He’ll be playing in the MLS All-Star Game on July 23.

“Growing up … I would never have a ball in my hands,” Freeman said in an interview in May with Brian Sciaretta of the American soccer website, Backheeled. “I would always be kicking a ball.”

Freeman has also been playing with the United States’ junior teams for years before getting the call-up to the men’s national team this year.

Alex Freeman put on the red, white and blue for the USMNT senior squad on May 22 for the 2025 CONCACAF Gold Cup. He played in exhibition matches against Turkey and Switzerland ahead of the tournament.

Freeman isn’t just on the roster. He’s starting for the team as one of the defenders.

After the USMNT won all three of its group stage matches it was on to the knockout round.

USMNT and Costa Rica needed penalty kicks to settle the quarterfinal match after they battled to a 2-2 tie. Freeman might be a USMNT newcomer but he was called upon in a key moment. He delivered the team’s third penalty kick in the eventual 4-3 shootout victory.

The win sets up a match against Guatemala in St. Louis on July 2. Guatemala upset Canada on penalty kicks in another quarterfinal.

Antonio Freeman played nine seasons in the NFL (1995-2003), including eight with the Packers. For his career, he played in 132 games and had 477 receptions for 7,251 yards and 61 touchdowns.

In eight seasons with the Packers from 1995-2001 and 2003 he played in 116 games with 431 receptions for 6,651 yards and 57 touchdowns. His yardage total is eighth-most in Packers history and his TD mark is sixth-most.

He led the Packers in receiving yards four straight seasons from 1996-1999. Freeman was inducted into the team’s Hall of Fame in 2009.

Antonio Freeman’s Super Bowl appearances

Antonio Freeman played and starred in the Packers’ back-to-back Super Bowl appearances in the 1990s.

In Super Bowl XXXI, he had three receptions for a game-high 105 yards and one touchdown in the 35-21 win over the New England Patriots. His 81-yard touchdown catch and run put the Packers back ahead 14-10 early in the second quarter for a lead they did not relinquish. Freeman dunked the football over the crossbar after crossing the end zone and was joined by teammate Andre Rison for a dance.

In Super Bowl XXXII, Freeman was again Favre’s go-to receiver with nine receptions for 126 yards and two touchdowns. Unfortunately, it came in a 31-24 loss to the Denver Broncos.
