Japan’s Naomi Osaka made a striking fashion statement at the US Open on Tuesday, entering the court during the night session with sparkling red roses in her ponytail and large red headphones.
“I just thought it would be really fun to do in New York under the lights,” the 27-year-old, who co-designed her outfit, said after the match. Osaka has often drawn attention for her distinctive fashion choices.
“I did always know I was going to take the hair off, because it is really heavy,” Osaka said. “There were a couple of times that I played in braids, and even that was kind of borderline. So yeah, I just did it for the presentation.”
During her match against Belgian Greet Minnen, Osaka wore a flower in her hair.
The former world number one got off to a successful start in the Grand Slam tournament, winning the match 6-3, 6-4.
