Oklahoma basketball expected to land Xzayvier Brown from transfer portal

Former St. Joseph’s guard Xzayvier Brown is expected to transfer to Oklahoma, according to multiple reports.

CBS Sports’ Jon Rothstein first reported the move. Brown entered the transfer portal after the season. He averaged 17.6 points, 5.2 rebounds and 4.3 assists for the Hawks last season en route to first-team All-Atlantic-10 honors.

Oklahoma’s odds for picking up Brown from the transfer portal increased when it was reported that Sooners head coach Porter Moser was set to hire St. Joseph’s assistant coach Justin Scott. Scott is Brown’s step-father. Scott would replace Niko Medved, who left Oklahoma earlier in April for an assistant coaching job at Minnesota.

The Sooners needed the roster help. Guard Jeremiah Fears, the team’s leading scorer last year, elected to enter the NBA Draft after just one year of college. Guard Duke Miles also entered the transfer portal the same day Fears declared he was turning pro. Miles finished third on the team in scoring last year.

Moser and his staff previously landed former Miami (FL) guard Nijel Pack and former Notre Dame forward Tae Davis in the portal. Davis averaged more than 15 points per game for the Fighting Irish last year and Pack averaged double-figures in each of his five seasons with the Hurricanes. He earned a sixth year of eligibility because he played in just nine games last year because of leg and ankle injuries.

Brown played two seasons at St. Joe’s, helping the team to back-to-back NIT seasons. He was named A-10 Freshman of the Year two seasons ago after 12.7 points per game and shooting 40% from 3-point range.
