For the first time since 2018, the Ohio State women’s golf team has advanced to the NCAA Championships.
The Buckeyes started strong on Monday, opening up a lead on the field in the first round of the Columbus Regional. The top five teams from each qualifier (54 holes) advance to next week’s NCAA Championships in Carlsbad, California. Even though Ohio State struggled in the second round on Tuesday, they had built a large enough lead and had a strong enough third round that they were never in danger of not advancing.
Joining the Buckeyes in advancing from this regional are Kansas, UNLV, and nationally-seeded Arkansas (No. 2) and LSU (No. 10).
30 teams compete in the NCAA Championships, with five each advancing from the six different regional qualifiers. After 54 holes at the Championships, the top 15 make the cut to play one more round. After 72 holes, the top eight teams are bracketed into a match play competition. Since the NCAA went to this format in 2015, the Buckeyes have reached the NCAA Championships twice, only advancing to the match play rounds one–a quarterfinal loss to USC in 2017.
The field in Carlsbad will be loaded, as No. 13 North Carolina and No. 15 TCU were the only top 15 seeds to fail to advance. How will the Buckeyes fare? Action begins Friday, May 16th.
