Official: West Bromwich Albion sign Alfie Gilchrist from Chelsea

I’m not sure anyone has ever celebrated scoring the sixth goal of a dominant 6-0 win as much as Alfie Gilchrist did against Everton a couple seasons ago, but the Academy defender’s delight at scoring his first senior professional goal was easily one of the best moments of that Pochettino season.

Alas, it appears that it will be the best moment of Gilchrist’s Chelsea career as well, with the 21-year-old today completing a permanent transfer to West Bromwich Albion. The Championship side are paying just a token fee to make it happen, reportedly £1.2m that could rise to a whopping £2m with add-ons.

Gilchrist spent last season on loan at Sheffield Wednesday in the same division, making 32 appearances all told, but barely featuring after January as the club signed a bunch of other players in that window and let him rot on the bench unregistered. Hard to say who’s treated Alfie worst there, Chelsea or Wednesday, but hopefully West Brom will show him some love.

“I’m 21 and I want to play regular senior football. I feel like I’ll have a good chance of doing that here if I work hard and continue to develop.”

Good luck, Alfie! Perhaps we’ll meet again.
