Following the arrival of Milos Kerkez from Bournemouth earlier in the summer, Liverpool were left with one too many left backs heading into the 2025-26 season. The question only ever seemed to be whether it would be long-time starter Andy Robertson or backup Kostas Tsimikas making way in the squad.
The question has been answered today and, as expected based on the transfer chatter over the past few weeks, it’s Tsimikas making way. The 29-year-old Greek Scouser will join Roma in Serie A for the season on loan, giving the player an opportunity to make his mark in Europe with one of Italy’s title contenders.
Roma had been rumoured to be Tsimikas’ preferred destination, but signing off on the deal was left late as the Reds had been hoping to find a suitable new permanent home if possible. When that proved not to be the case, the proposed Roma loan became seen as the best option for all parties and the deal was done.
Tsimikas joined Liverpool in the summer of 2020 in a £12M deal from Olympiacos and quickly established himself as one of the most liked players in the squad and a firm fan favourite, becoming a trusted deputy for Robertson and making 115 appearances for the Reds over the next five seasons.
Roma are a darkhorse title contender in Serie A after finishing fifth last season and qualifying to play in the 2025-26 edition of the Europa League. They have won their opening two games of the Italian league season and next up will face Torino and Lazio domestically after the international break.
