Offense or defense? Where did Jaguars' Travis Hunter line up in practice No. 6?

Where was Travis Hunter playing today during the Jacksonville Jaguars’ sixth training camp practice?

The first two training camp practices for Hunter came at wide receiver. The second two were at cornerback, and during Monday’s practice, he was back at wideout. Today, Hunter was again in his teal jersey playing wide receiver.

Through five practices, which included three days at receiver and two at cornerback, Hunter’s snap count between the two positions was almost equal. By Michael DiRocco’s count, Hunter had played 95 total snaps in the five practices, with 48 coming on offense and 47 on defense.

As GM James Gladstone said during the offseason, the team views cornerback as Hunter’s more natural position. This is why, particularly through offseason programs, the bulk of his on-field reps came at receiver, where offensive coordinator Grant Udinski is very pleased with Hunter’s progression.

Based on what Liam Coen said after Monday’s practice, it sounds like Hunter will get one more practice on defense before Friday’s scrimmage.

That mock game will play an important role in determining what Hunter’s practice schedule looks like moving forward. The next step in Hunter’s two-way progression is to practice on both sides of the ball during the same day.

“I think what will happen is where he’s on offense (on Monday), he’ll go back to defense before our mock game, scrimmage (on Friday) and we’ll be able to use that mock as an evaluation to see what do we need to do now,” Liam Coen said after Monday’s practice. “What did it look like in the scrimmage? Do we need to get him more on defense or hey, these other guys are producing and developing and we can keep with the schedule as is. It’ll be not a defining moment but an evaluation time for us.”
