Sjoeke Nüsken has been promoted to vice-captain of the German women’s team, supporting new captain Janina Minge following Giulia Gwinn’s exit from the European Championship due to injury.

“We discussed this within the team and also received the message from (coach) Christian (Wück) that Sjoeke will take on the vice-captaincy. This is not a big surprise,” playmaker Linda Dallmann told a news conference in Zurich on Sunday.

Centre back Minge stepped up as captain during the opening 2-0 victory against Poland when Gwinn went off the pitch with her tournament-ending knee injury.

Dallmann said of midfielder Nüsken: “She is a player who has undergone tremendous development and has made another big leap forward since moving to Chelsea. She was also very present in the first match here. So we all nodded in agreement.”

For the second group match against Denmark on Tuesday in Basel, Carlotta Wamser is expected to replace Gwinn as right back.
