North Carolina freshman Drake Powell announced Wednesday on Instagram that he is declaring for the 2025 NBA draft after one season with the Tar Heels.
Powell averaged 7.4 points, 3.4 rebounds and 1.1 assists on 37.9% shooting from 3-point range in 37 games this past season. He finished in double figures 10 times, including a season-high 18 points on Nov. 27 in a loss to Michigan State.
The 6-foot-6 forward showcased his ability as a floor spacer, connecting on at least two 3-pointers in eight games. He also proved to be a versatile defender with his length.
Powell entered the season as a projected first-round pick out of Northwood High School in North Carolina. However, the McDonald’s All-American selection was inconsistent at times and is viewed as a possible second-rounder at this stage of the predraft process.
The 19-year-old will be able to improve his draft positioning in team workouts and the combine on May 11-18 in Chicago, Illinois. The 2025 NBA draft will occur June 25-26 in New York City.
