NFL writer can't let Commanders' name debate go

“This is the song that never ends… Yes, it goes on and on, my friend.”

This was a children’s song heard on a children’s television show being watched in our home many times years ago.

Well, it’s not children’s television song lyrics, but the Washington Commanders‘ changing the team name back to the Redskins is becoming a song that simply never ends. It seems whenever there is Commanders news, those in the national media jump on the bandwagon and suggest the newest development is evidence that Josh Harris and his new ownership partners are working feverishly to change the name back to Redskins.

Mike Florio of NBC Pro Football Talk this week declared he was getting out in front of it and warning us of what the change in uniforms will lead to: the evil name “Redskins” returning. Wrong again, Mike.

Wrong, because there is actually no evidence suggesting the Commanders are going back to “Redskins”. You see, going back to older uniforms because they evoke great memories does not equate to going back to the name “Redskins.”

In addition, going back to the older uniforms, because the previous owner and his new president discarded the past for uniforms that resembled those of a high school team or an expansion team in an inferior league, does not equate to returning to the name “Redskins.”

Simply because the President of the United States conveyed he would have never caved under the pressure and stuck with “Redskins,” does not mean the new ownership is behind the scenes working on changing the name.

What does the actual evidence show us?

The Commanders’ ownership chose this week to return to older, nicer, readily accepted and beloved uniforms, yes, but what did they do with the old majestic logo? It remains a thing of the past. They could have easily at least included the spear logo or the chief in headdress logo on the jersey to show they are not accepting that the logo or name was racist.

Yet, they chose not to include either logo, opting instead to stick with the bland, vanilla, and boring “W”- the Commanders’ logo.

Josh Harris has been clear: he wants to honor the past, specifically the good from the franchise’s history.

It is progress and nothing more should be made of it. Perhaps we have become a nation of conspiracy theorists? Thus, are we finding conspiracies under every rock, where conspiracies may not even exist?
