Russell Wilson is firmly entrenched as the New York Giants‘ starting quarterback with training camp just around the bend, but despite that certainty, a black cloud looms.
After selecting Ole Miss quarterback Jaxson Dart with the 25th overall pick in the 2025 NFL draft, it’s only a matter of time before the Giants hand over the reins. But when will that be? General manager Joe Schoen and head coach Brian Daboll appear content with Dart developing this season, or is that just smoke?
At least one NFL insider believes it is.
Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk views Wilson as a quarterback whose “clock is ticking.” He even leaves the door open to Wilson losing his job out of camp, with Dart starting under center in Week 1.
Russell Wilson, Giants: If he’s the Week 1 starter (if Jaxson Dart lives up to his first-round draft stock, Wilson shouldn’t be), the clock will be ticking. Immediately. In 2004, the Giants benched Kurt Warner after nine games for Eli Manning, even though the Giants were 5-4 at the time. When Dart is ready, Dart will play. Even if Wilson makes it through 2025 without getting benched, he’ll have to do plenty to keep Dart on the sideline for 2026.
If the Giants turn to Dart this season, something has gone wrong on the field. Again. It would mean the offense is struggling, the switch from Daniel Jones to Wilson didn’t yield the results so many were certain it would, and Schoen and Daboll have to use their final lifeline.
It’s a plausible scenario, but not the ideal outcome.
Still, one thing remains certain: Barring injury, Wilson will be the team’s starter when the Giants open the season against the Washington Commanders. What happens after that is anyone’s guess.
