Other than the usual suspects on the Detroit Lions’ roster, there is one player in particular who has a lot on his shoulders in 2025.
That is none other than edge rusher Marcus Davenport, who is expected to start opposite Aidan Hutchinson once again in 2025 after he was re-signed.
Davenport was signed in free agency last offseason to take on the same role opposite Detroit’s best defender, but he saw his season cut short due to injury, which has been an all-too-common occurrence during his career.
Because of the injury concerns surrounding him and the key role he’s set to play in 2025, Davenport was predicted to be the Lions’ biggest bust for this coming season by Bleacher Report’s Kristopher Knox.
“Financially, the Lions don’t have a ton invested in Davenport,” he said. “However, they are again banking on him being a reliable pass-rushing complement to Aidan Hutchinson. History, though, suggests that he won’t be.
“Davenport appeared in just two games last year before suffering a season-ending triceps injury. He was limited to four games in 2023 by ankle injuries, and he hasn’t topped five sacks in a season since 2021,” Knox concluded.
Davenport tallied a half of a sack in two games last season before succumbing to a season-ending triceps injury.
Having Davenport around as a depth piece would’ve been fine, but the release of Za’Darius Smith now thrusts Davenport into a crucial role in Detroit’s defense.
That is incredibly troubling because Davenport has only played in six games the last two years, and he has never played a full season in his career.
Adding to that, his career production isn’t making anyone excited, either. Davenport has posted two or less sacks in four of his seven seasons, and he hasn’t posted more than two since 2021.
Considering the role he’s slated to be in, and the full body of work throughout his career, it’s not hard to see why Knox made the decision he did in predicting Davenport being a bust this coming season.
