With theĀ New York Giants‘ 2025 training camp only two weeks away, it is our duty to break down each unit on the roster before camp opens to provide a preview of what to expect.
Today, we will feature the inside linebackers, a unit that once made the Giants champions and could be on its way to doing that again.
Coaching staff
Shane Bowen (defensive coordinator), John Egorugwu (inside linebackers)
Egorugwu returns for a fourth season as the ILB coach. It is the second season he will be coaching in Bowen’s system, and the transition period should be over. Things should run a bit smoother this season.
Inside linebackers
Starters: Bobby Okereke, Micah McFadden
Others: Darius Muasau, Dyontae Johnson, Chris Board, Demetrius Flannigan-Fowles, Ty Summers
McFadden led the team in total tackles (107) and solos (60) but missed three games due to injuries. Okereke missed the Giants’ final five games of 2024 with a herniated disc in his back. Both are said to be on track for training camp and could both be poised for big seasons in 2025.
Muasau was a pleasant surprise as a late-round rookie last year, starting seven games and amassing 55 total stops. Johnson missed most of the season with an ankle issue. He was activated late in the season and played in the team’s final two games. Summers, mainly a special teamer, was also called into action late in the year due to the injuries and played fairly well.
Overview
Okereke will wear the green dot as the signal caller and will be in charge as a team captain. He should be more comfortable in his second season in Bowen’s system. McFadden is seen as a rising star in the league and could have a breakout year, health permitting.
The depth is shaky, however, prompting general manager Joe Schoen to seek some veteran options in Board and Flannigan-Fowles. They will challenge the others for roster spots. Like every unit this summer, the competition for jobs will be hotter than it has been in years.
