Nets' Haywood Highsmith could draw trade interest near deadline

The Brooklyn Nets have gone through the 2025 NBA offseason looking to remake the roster not only for the 2025-26 season, but for the near future as well. Brooklyn selected five players in the first round of the 2025 NBA Draft along with trading for players like forward Michael Porter Jr., but there is another player that the Nets may be enticed into trading down the line.

“He remains immediately trade-eligible as we speak, but that date is the unofficial start to the NBA’s in-season trade frenzy, with the majority of free agents who signed new deals this summer becoming trade-eligible then,” NBA insider Jake Fischer wrote when discussing Nets forward Haywood Highsmith (h/t to NetsDaily). Earlier this month, Brooklyn traded a conditional 2026 second-round pick to the Miami Heat for Highsmith and a 2032 second-round pick.

“It’s no secret that his new team has no plans to be competitive this season,” Fischer continued. “And Brooklyn’s phone certainly figures to ring with interest in Highsmith, who has shown strong 3-and-D potential when healthy and already possesses some valuable postseason experience. The 28-year-old is also crucially scheduled to earn a modest $5.6 million this season, which would make him a comfortable addition for a contender in need of such attributes.”

Highsmith, 28, is coming off a 2024-25 season with the Heat in which he averaged 6.5 points, 3.4 rebounds, and 1.5 assists per game while shooting 45.8% from the field and 38.2% from three-point land in 74 games played. To Fischer’s point, Highsmith is under contract for this upcoming season for $5.6 million, meaning that his expiring contract wouldn’t be hard to move at the trade deadline.

As of this writing, the Nets have plenty of players that can fill the small forward position that Highsmith plays so at some point in time, Brooklyn may have to deal certain players to open up playing time for their younger players. Highsmith will bring his defensive expertise and long-range shooting to the team during the first half of the season, but it wouldn’t be a surprise to see him dealt away at the trade deadline given the Nets’ rebuild.
