NBA Legend Allen Iverson Reveals Tragic News on Thursday originally appeared on Athlon Sports.
Allen Iverson played 14 seasons in the NBA and is widely considered one of the greatest players in basketball history. In addition to being named to the NBA’s 75th Anniversary Team, he was an 11-time All-Star, the 2001 league MVP, a three-time All-NBA First Team selection, the 1997 Rookie of the Year, a four-time scoring champion and led the league in steals three times.
Through it all, he averaged 26.7 points, 3.7 rebounds and 6.2 assists per game in his career.
Now 50 years old, he’s recently taken on a new challenge in becoming the vice president of basketball for Reebok. He was appointed to that role in October 2023 and works alongside Shaquille O’Neal, who is the president.
Meanwhile, on Thursday, Iverson took to social media to acknowledge the passing of two-time NBA All-Star Stephon Marbury’s mother, Mabel Marbury.
“Heartbroken!!” Iverson wrote. “My thoughts and prayers go out to Steph and the Marbury family. She always treated me like a son. Rest easy, Mama Marbury. I love you!”
Iverson and Stephon Marbury built a close friendship over the years, having first met as they finished up their college careers and entered the NBA. Iverson was selected first overall in the 1996 draft, while Marbury went fourth.
They went on to compete against each other for years in the NBA. Iverson spent most of his career with the Philadelphia 76ers, later playing for the Denver Nuggets, Detroit Pistons and Memphis Grizzlies. Marbury played for the Minnesota Timberwolves, New Jersey Nets (now the Brooklyn Nets), Phoenix Suns, New York Knicks and Boston Celtics.
But as Iverson stated, the relationship was deeper than just facing off on the court. Iverson became close with Stephon Marbury’s mother, who passed away on Tuesday.
