Nation's No. 5 Recruit Names 'Top' Team in Recruitment

The Texas Longhorns are in good standing with one of the nation’s top players in the 2027 recruiting class.

Five-star cornerback John Meredith recently spoke with On3 and revealed the top schools in his recruitment. Although the Texas A&M Aggies are sitting at the top of his list right now, the Longhorns aren’t far behind.

“Texas A&M is doing the best job with me right now, and they are sitting at the top of my list,” Meredith said. “Every time I go there, it feels like home. Coach JP and Coach Mason make it feel like I already go there. They are hitting me up every day and they know me really well. I am treated like family every time I am on campus.”

Texas head coach Steve Sarkisian and his staff have made a good impression on Meredith thus far as well. His recruitment could very well come down to an in-state battle between the two rivals.

“Texas right there,” Meredith said. “Coach Mark Orphey is a great coach and he has been great to talk to. The staff at Texas is really drawing me in. They are really coming hard. I have been there four or five times and I will be back in the fall. They have made me feel like a top priority too.”

Meredith is ranked the No. 1 cornerback in the nation for the 2027 recruiting class, according to 247Sports and Rivals. On3 views him as the No. 2 player at his position and No. 5 nationally.

The Trinity (Arlington, TX) product also competes in track and field, something Sarkisian and his staff heavily value. “Possesses the speed to stay with pass catchers at multiple levels and the physical willingness to tackle in the open field,” 247Sports scouting analyst Gabe Brooks said of Meredith.

Texas currently holds one commit for the 2027 cycle in four-star linebacker Taven Epps.
