Mysterious absences of 49ers top cornerback and rookie running back explained

San Francisco 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan provided some clarity on a pair of injured players after Thursday’s practice.

Cornerback Deommodore Lenoir and rookie running back Jordan James were both absent from Tuesday’s practice, and then missed Thursday’s session after getting Wednesday off. Shanahan’s Thursday press conference was his first chance to give context for Lenoir and James’s absences.

Lenoir has “get some hip irritation,” according to Shanahan. The expectation is he’ll miss the entire set of three practices which run through Saturday. The 49ers are off Monday, and there’s a chance Lenoir returns Tuesday.

It isn’t ideal to have a veteran cornerback who figures to be the team’s No. 1 player at that position missing time, but Lenoir shouldn’t see any major drop-off for missing a handful of practices.

James is a different story. The rookie fifth-round pick is working through a knee injury that could keep him out for more than a few sessions.

“We’re going to re-evaluate him throughout this week,” Shanahan said. “See how it goes, how he recovers and then see where we are in a week.”

There’s a real battle for roster spots at the back of the running back depth chart and James missing significant time would be a setback he may not be able to overcome. Even if his roster spot is locked in, missing sizable portions of camp can set a rookie behind the curve early and make it more difficult to find playing time once the regular season starts. If James only misses a week, it shouldn’t be a major problem. If he starts missing more time than that, it may alter his Year 1 trajectory.
