Mitchell Aces draw Harrisburg Woodies in Class A South District first round

Jul. 30—YANKTON — With their first season as a member of the Sunshine League behind them, the Mitchell Aces amateur baseball club now turns toward the Class A South District tournament.

As the No. 4 seed in the South District, Mitchell opens postseason play against the top-seeded Harrisburg Woodies at 5:30 p.m. Friday, Aug. 1, at Riverside Field in Yankton.

Of note, the Woodies made their return to South Dakota amateur baseball this summer after five dormant seasons and compiled a 21-1 record. Their roster features several notable amateur stars who have played for Class B clubs in recent years, including a handful who helped power the Dell Rapids Mudcats to consecutive state championships in 2021 and 2022.

The Aces are in their second season of existence as a club. This summer, they own a 2-18 record, though seven losses came by three runs or fewer. In the final weekend of the regular season, Mitchell split a doubleheader against Class A foe Aberdeen.

The other two squads in the district, the Yankton Lakers and Sioux Falls Brewers, face off at 8 p.m. Friday.

Winners of the first-round games square off at 1 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 1, to decide one of the two Class A state tournament bids. The losers play at in an elimination game at 4 p.m. on Saturday, with the last-chance game to follow at 7 p.m.

Game 2: Yankton Lakers vs. Sioux Falls Brewers, 8 p.m.

Saturday, Aug. 2

Game 3: Game 1 winner vs. Game 2 winner (Game 3 winner is South Rep No. 1), 1 p.m.

Game 4: Loser Game 1 vs. Loser Game 2, 4 p.m.

Game 5: Game 3 loser vs. Game 4 winner (Game 5 winner is South Rep No. 2), 7 p.m.
