Missouri State basketball hopes to land this former Kickapoo standout in transfer portal

Missouri State basketball already landed former Central star Tyrique Brooks in the transfer portal, but Cuonzo Martin isn’t done targeting Springfield area talent when building his roster for this upcoming season.

Former Kickapoo star Brayden Shorter posted on social media that he has received an offer from Missouri State. He spent the last two seasons at Division II Washburn and is in a position to make a jump to the mid-major level.

Shorter was among the star players on a Washburn team that ranked among the best in the nation this past season. He made more 3-pointers than anyone at the level and made 36.7% of his outside shots.

Shorter was the best player on Kickapoo’s 2023 state runner-up team. At 6-foot-5, he was a two-time all-state performer and averaged 17.4 points and 6.2 rebounds as a senior.

A handful of mid-major programs are also pursuing Shorter’s shooting abilities. He shared a social media post saying that Indiana State, Murray State, Illinois Chicago, South Dakota State, North Dakota State, Milwaukee and several others are also pursuing him.

If Shorter were to join the Bears, he would be the third Springfield standout to join the Bears’ 2025-26 roster. Brooks announced his transfer from Division II Missouri Southern last month, and they have a walk-on commitment from Greenwood standout Collin Clark.

Martin has shown a commitment to recruiting the Springfield area during his first year back with the program. He’s also extended an offer to Logan-Rogersville 2027 standout Chase Branham, and the staff has been in contact with Rolla 2026 star Ethan Brown.
