Missing element from Colts QB situation highlighted in recent rankings

ESPN’s latest quarterback rankings for the 2025 NFL season highlight what we already know about the Indianapolis Colts’ situation under center: consistency is needed.

Jeremy Fowler is currently going position-by-position and ranking the top 10 players at each with insights from NFL executives, coaches, and scouts, helping to compile this list.

To the surprise of no one, the Colts did not appear on these rankings, which also included two honorable mentions just outside of the top 10, along with another six quarterbacks who received votes.

Competing for the Colts’ starting quarterback job are Daniel Jones and Anthony Richardson. Ultimately, what head coach Shane Steichen is looking for is day-in and day-out consistency at the position.

“We’re just looking for consistency on a daily basis,” Steichen said earlier this offseason. “I mean, you look around the league, the teams that were in the playoffs, the quarterback play was consistent.”

The quarterback play often determines the ceiling for NFL teams, but the Colts don’t necessarily need top 10 play from this position in order to have the opportunity to stack some wins.

As we’ve discussed before, the roster around the quarterback position on this Colts team is in really good shape, and if Indianapolis can get consistency and steadiness from under center, they should find themselves in a lot of games this season.

Jones may be entering training camp with the advantage after Richardson missed most of OTAs and minicamp due to a shoulder injury. But once Richardson is back on the field, the competition for the starting job will ensue.
