Miguel Vargas giveth (grand slam) and is taketh away (wrist contusion)

Miguel Vargas goes down after a collision with Aaron Judge’s thigh.

Multiple errors and a crumbling bullpen were no match for the Yankees sluggers, and the White Sox offense went cold early on.

Davis Martin started off looking great with two strikeouts, but walked Aaron Judge with two outs. That walk would come back to haunt him as Cody Bellinger homered to right field, putting the Yankees up, 2-0, early on. The White Sox would hit into ground outs for two quick outs, but Kyle Teel and Lenyn Sosa managed back-to-back singles. Andrew Benintendi left the runners stranded to end the inning.

Jazz Chisholm Jr. got hold of a fastball and opened the top of the second with a solo home run. With two outs, Sosa couldn’t handle the ball on his throw to first, giving Anthony Volpe first base. Flustered, Martin issued another walk, this time to Trent Grisham, prompting a visit from Ethan Katz. Ben Rice battled and won with an RBI single as Martin’s pitch count climbed. Thankfully, Judge went down swinging. Volpe collected his 18th error of the season, allowing Edgar Quero to get on base. Will Warren walked two in a row, one via a hit by pitch, to load the bases. With two outs, Miguel Vargas stepped up to be a hero with his FIRST career grand slam, tying the game, 4-4.

With two outs in the fourth, Volpe doubled, pulling Martin from the game. Tyler Alexander stepped in and served up a grounder to end the frame. The Sox were retired in order.

The top of the fifth would turn brutal for the Sox after Rice singled. A throwing error from Curtis Mead would give Judge first and send Rice home, but take Vargas out of the game after a collision. After a realignment of Sox defense, Stanton reached on a fielding error, but poor base running would allow the Sox to tag Bellinger. Chisholm’s single sent Judge home, putting the Yankees up by two with two outs. Paul Goldschmidt went down on strikes, ending the unfortunate half. The Teel and Sosa duo both landed on base with one out in the bottom half. Teel with a single, Sosa with a walk. But the threat was thwarted by a fly out from Quero.

Goldschmidt reached on the third White Sox error of the night, and Ryan McMahon doubled. Volpe knocked Goldschmidt in with a sac fly, prompting newly-recalled Cam Booser to take over on the mound. The home runs continued with a two-run shot from Grisham, making it 9-4 — with no answer from the South Siders.

Steven Wilson pitched in the ninth and allowed two singles. A sac fly sent in another run, padding the lead even more, to 10-4. In true White Sox fashion, the Sox were retired in order to finish the game with a whimper.
