Michigan QBs Bryce Underwood, Jadyn Davis impressing teammates with maturity, deep throws

ANN ARBOR, Mich. — Every spring, Michigan football talks a big game about opening up the offense, but when rubber hits the road, more often than not, the Wolverines are a run-first team with some complementary passing. However, this spring, players insist: there’s a lot more passing, at least in practice.

Of course, much of what happens during the season in that light will come down to playcalling, as new offensive coordinator Chip Lindsey could call a lot more runs than passes. But in terms of what the players are experiencing in spring ball, there’s a ton more downfield throws than not.

“For sure. We’re slinging the rock. We’re slinging the rock,” junior offensive guard Nathan Efobi said. “But, yeah, we’ve had a lot more pass plays. It’s throwing it down the field. I’m enjoying it. I love it.”

The other thing we’ve heard about this spring is how both Bryce Underwood and Jadyn Davis have had pinpoint precision in their throws. Accuracy was an issue last year, despite Davis Warren having completed upwards of 60% of his passes. But there were a ton of turnovers, quickly ending the offense’s chances and giving the defense less time on the sideline.

A transfer from Arkansas, safety TJ Metcalf has been impressed by what he’s seen from the quarterbacks. With two interceptions a year ago against Auburn quarterback Payton Thorne while also breaking up passes from Texas QB Quinn Ewers and Ole Miss standout Jaxson Dart, Metcalf knows what high-caliber quarterbacks look like. And he’s impressed with the spring ball duo in terms of both their maturity as well as ball placement.

“I think for those guys to be so young, I think they really mature well,” Metcalf said. “They’ve been making a lot of good balls. I know we’re always talking about it. It’s like every catch that a receiver makes, they’re putting the ball in the right spot so only the receiver can catch the ball, and I think that’s what’s going to be good for us. Both Bryce and Jadyn, they’ve been doing extremely well, and I like what I see out of them.”

But is this just more spring bluster? Is this a narrative that will collapse once the spring game hits or the season starts?

Don’t count on it, Efobi says. Because all of the talk about ’70-yard bombs’ appears to be real.

“Dogs. Y’all have seen the clips online, they can sling the rock. I’m just happy to see them improve every day,” Efobi said. “They can show plenty of clips. They’re throwing it down the field, doing fadeaways in practice. It’s dots.”

Michigan football fans will get an opportunity to see both quarterbacks in action on Saturday in the annual spring game at The Big House.
