Michigan Insider Delivers Striking Verdict on Bryce Underwood Before 2025 Season originally appeared on Athlon Sports.
There’s no doubt that the Michigan Wolverines have a strong tradition of landing talented high school recruits, and one of their biggest wins in recent years has been Class of 2025 quarterback Bryce Underwood.
However, it was more than simply landing, as they had to flip him from the LSU Tigers, where he was committed from Jan. 6, 2024, to Nov. 21, 2024
Now, there is a lot of hype surrounding Underwood, and in a video posted to the “On3” YouTube channel, Chris Balas, senior editor of The Wolverine, revealed what many are seeing from the quarterback.
“Bryce Underwood, from practice one to practice 15 and what he brings to the table in terms of physical skills, is like nothing anybody’s ever seen here before… People who have been here for 35, 40 years say he is by far the best freshman quarterback, true freshman they’ve seen,” Balas said.

That’s certainly a positive sign for Michigan, considering that On3 Industry Rankings placed him as a five-star prospect and the No. 1 player in the nation from the 2025 recruiting class.
Throughout the team’s offseason workouts and practices, he’s also impressed several members of the coaching staff, including pass game coordinator and wide receiver coach Ron Bellamy.
“He’s smart, man,” Bellamy said. “The way Bryce attacks football, man, he’s the first one, last one. He’s a sponge. Always wants to learn, hanging around the receivers. Great leader.”
However, it remains to be seen if Underwood is ready enough to be Michigan’s starter to open up the 2025 season, as they host the New Mexico Lobos for a Week 1 matchup on Aug. 30.
In an article for Athlon Sports, Steven Lassan predicted he will, which would mark just the fourth time in program history that Michigan starts a true freshman quarterback, following Rick Leach (1975), Chad Henne (2004) and Tate Forcier (2009).
