After getting swept in the first round of the playoffs, the Miami Heat are expected to re-tool and try to go on a postseason run next year. Under Pat Riley, Miami has never really had to rebuild, and that isn’t expected to change anytime soon.
With a core of All-Stars like Bam Adebayo and Tyler Herro, Miami might be a piece away from making the postseason outright instead of battling their way through the play-in, and a recent report suggests they could target a trade with the Detroit Pistons.
This season, the Pistons earned their first playoff berth since the Blake Griffin years as the sixth seed. They found their stride in January, improving as the season went on.
Most of their success this season came after Jaden Ivey was ruled out for the season with a broken leg. That’s not to say they are better without him, the young team just came into their own later in the year. However, the timing of their surge does make him more expendable than initially thought.
“The guard spot feels like the most logical place for Miami to try upgrading this summer,” wrote Bleacher Report’sZach Buckley. “Ivey is, however, accustomed to playing with a more ball-dominant backcourt partner, so there should be enough touches to keep him and Herro happy. Ivey’s blink-and-you’ll-miss-him burst would enhance the Heat’s transition attack, and he has enough tools to be more than a traffic cone on defense.”
While Ivey would undabtly be an upgrade over Terry Rozier, especially long-term, the Pistons would demand a sizeable return for their prized young guard.
Nikola Jovic or Pelle Larsson would be a good starting point, and additional draft capital could be added to sweeten the pot.
