Mexico announced the 25 player call up list for the September friendlies against Japan and South Korea. Coach Javier Aguirre called up the players to the return to action for the senior team after winning the 2025 Gold Cup. Mexico will face off against Japan against on September 6th in Oakland Coliseum and then against South Korea in September 9th in Geodis Park, Nashville.
The call up list was the following:
- Goalkeepers: Luis Angel Malagon (America), Raul Rangel (Chivas), Carlos Moreno (Pachuca)
- Defenders: Johan Vasquez (Genoa), Cesar Montes (Lokomotiv Moscow), Rodrigo Huescas (FC Copenhagen), Mateo Chavez (AZ Alkmaar), Jorge Sanchez (Cruz Azul), Jesus Gallardo (Toluca), Jesus Orozco (Cruz Azul), Juan Sanchez Purata (Tigres)
- Midfielders: Edson Alvarez (Fenerbahce), Orbelin Pineda (AEK Athens), Marcel Ruiz (Toluca), Roberto Alvarado (Chivas), Carlos Rodriguez (Cruz Azul), Diego Lainez (Tigres), Erik Lira (Cruz Azul), Erick Sanchez (America)
- Forwards: Raul Jimenez (Fulham), Santiago Gimenez (AC Milan), Cesar Huerta (Anderlecht), Hirving Lozano (San Diego FC), Alexis Vega (Toluca), German Berterame (Monterrey)
The most notable call ups is the return of Hirving Lozano and Rodrigo Huescas to the National team. Huescas had a great season in FC Copenhagen but his controversial speeding incident, which earned him a date in court, ended up costing him his participation in the 2025 Gold Cup, where he wasn’t called up. Meanwhile Lozano made his debut after missing out from the Gold Cup because of an injury. From the training camp held this week by Aguirre, a couple of players made the final list. Sanchez Purata, Berterame, Lainez and Erick Sanchez all made a comeback to the National team after their training camp.
The most notable omissions are Julian Quiñones, Julian Araujo and Angel Sepulveda. While Quiñones and Araujo hadn’t had a good start to their respective seasons, the Sepulveda call up is surprising as he had a very good Apertura 2025 season, where he is in 2nd place in the goal scoring table with 5 goals. It might be Aguirre is looking at other players and Sepulveda didn’t have a great summer with the National team. While many are also surprised that teen sensation Gilberto Mora wasn’t called up, he will be playing with the U20 team in a friendly tour of Paraguay as he prepares for the 2025 u20 World Cup.
Mexico will play against Japan on September 6th in Oakland in a very tough matchup, where Mexico will go as the underdogs against a Japan side that has gotten some great results since the 2022 World Cup. Mexico will then travel to Nashville, where they will face South Korea in Geodis Park on September 9th.
