The New York Mets (45-26) couldn’t have asked for a better start this season, as they have the top record in the NL. However, right-handed pitcher Tylor Megill has not pulled his weight recently.

Megill notched a 1.73 ERA in April but jumped to a 5.96 mark in May and had a 4.91 mark in June ahead of Saturday’s start against the Tampa Bay Rays. The struggles continued for the 29-year-old, as he coughed up six runs (three earned) on seven hits across 3.2 innings pitched. The Mets lost 8-4.

“I feel like he was fine for the first time through the order. Then in the fourth inning, even with the first and third, he gets a strikeout, and then we don’t make a play,” he said. “You know, he doesn’t make the play on that bunt or safety squeeze. We make that play, that’s two outs, and then he gets the next guy.”

“Obviously, he got the strikeout there, and then it kind of spiraled on him. Base hit, base hit,” he continued. “I feel like there was a lot of non-competitive pitches, especially the secondaries…He lost it there, pretty much.”

Megill is now 5-5 with a 3.95 ERA across 14 starts, which is a slight upgrade over his numbers last season. The 6-foot-7-inch, 230-pounder was 4-5 with a 4.04 ERA over 16 appearances, including 15 starts. He also allowed five runs in 4.1 playoff innings.

The Mets will try to avoid getting swept by the Rays on Sunday afternoon.
