Mets Called Cubs Looking to Trade Superstar for Pete Crow-Armstrong: Report originally appeared on Athlon Sports.
The New York Mets have to be looking back on their decision to trade Pete Crow-Armstrong for Javier Baez as one of the worst mistakes the organization has ever made.
That deal was made in a much different time and by a different front office. While the Mets made a mistake, they can’t undo it. Though they apparently tried.
According to a recent report from SNY’s Andy Martino, New York contacted the Chicago Cubs about a potential swap involving Crow-Armstrong and Pete Alonso ahead of the 2023 trade deadline.
“During this time, the Mets front office hatched a brief, outside-the-box idea,” Martino reported. “What about calling the Cubs to feel them out about Pete for Pete? The Cubs were known to have liked Alonso and rumored to be weighing a pursuit of him.
“According to league sources with direct knowledge of the situation, the call was made. The conversation was brief. The answer was no.”
There have been reports over the past few years that the Cubs could be interested in Alonso.
Ultimately, the Cubs went in a different, cheaper direction. They made a trade with the Los Angeles Dodgers six months later, in January 2024, that brought in Michael Busch. The youngster has 40 home runs and 124 RBIs in a little more than a season and a half with the Cubs. He isn’t eligible for arbitration until 2027.
While Alonso would be a decent pickup, it’s fair to note this type of trade wouldn’t have made much sense from the Cubs’ perspective in 2023. The Cubs were building around young talent back then, and their current success is due to that approach.
