Mavericks summer league coach reveals what makes Cooper Flagg special

Cooper Flagg Dallas Mavericks

The Dallas Mavericks have gotten their first glimpse of Cooper Flagg, and he has lived up to the hype.

After trading Luka Doncic to the Los Angeles Lakers in February, the Mavericks might have earned a second chance to build around a young star, getting Flagg with the No. 1 pick. While Flagg always was the surefire selection at No. 1, there were still some doubters ahead of his summer league debut.

While a 5-of-21 shooting performance in his first outing was far from ideal, Flagg bounced back with a 31-point game in a showdown against the San Antonio Spurs and No. 2 pick Dylan Harper. After those games, Dallas shut down their top pick for the summer, but he left a lasting impression.

Next time Flagg takes the floor, he’ll be playing for Jason Kidd with the world watching his Mavericks debut. In Vegas, Flagg played for Mavericks summer league coach Josh Broghamer, who has been more than impressed with the future star.

“Incredible for a kid who we’re saying, ‘We’re going to give you the basketball and they’re going to pick you up full court,'” Broghamer said. “Everyone has 10 fouls, so there is no penalty for grabbing and holding. The referees can’t call everything on every play, so it’s even more exhausting and tougher on him than a regular game.”

Considering Flagg will enter the league with a natural target on his back as the No. 1 pick, his ability to shake off physicality and play through contact will be crucial to his success as a rookie. Although we won’t see Flagg on the floor again for a few months, he gave the NBA world a taste of what they might see.
