Matt LaFleur rehashes 'rules of engagement' entering first padded practice of Packers camp

GREEN BAY – Before the first padded practice of training camp the morning of July 28, Green Bay Packers coach Matt LaFleur met with the media. Here are some quick highlights.

Matt LaFleur has players brush up on ‘rules of engagement’ entering first padded practice

With pads being strapped for the first time, LaFleur said he had a lengthy meeting with players about how to take care of their teammates when the physicality ramps up.

“We had a long talk and video,” LaFleur said, “showing the rules of engagement. Things that were good from a year ago, and things that weren’t great. Bottom line is we need everybody to stay up (on) their feet. We’re not going to the ground today. So that’s the expectations I have for our guys.”

Even before pads, the Packers haven’t always stayed on their feet in camp. Most notably, new cornerback Nate Hobbs plowed through receiver Dontayvion Wicks last week, forcing an incompletion. Hobbs received a lecture from LaFleur on the practice field after that rep.

“I love the competitive spirit out there,” LaFleur said, “but I want them to take care of each other as well.”

Elgton Jenkins activated off non-football injury list

The Packers are getting closer to getting their new center back on the field.

Elgton Jenkins will be activated from the non-football injury list July 28, LaFleur said. Jenkins has not participated on the field throughout the offseason as he moves from left guard to center, mostly of his choice. But he entered camp on the NFI because of a back injury.

General manager Brian Gutekunst said at the start of camp Jenkins had indicated he’s ready to practice once his back heals. The injury was expected to be short term, but LaFleur said the Packers will still ease Jenkins back into full-time reps.

“He’ll be limited,” LaFleur said. “I think he’s just doing individual. Then we’ll build him up.”

LaFleur wants Jordan Love making ‘smart decisions’ but understands training camp is time for more aggressiveness

It isn’t uncommon for quarterbacks to push the envelope in camp, and Jordan Love has been no different through the first few days.

Love has thrown two interceptions in camp, both tight-window throws he might not have pulled the trigger on during the fall. His first came when safety Xavier McKinney was lurking in the end zone. Given McKinney’s reputation as a ball hawk, Love likely would have been more cautious in a game.

On July 27, Love threw into traffic over the middle. Linebacker Ty’Ronn Hopper intercepted the pass, an easy pick thrown directly to him.

“Bad decision,” LaFleur said. “When he made the decision to throw the ball, Hopper had his back turned, and he was running. I think it goes to you’ve got to see out in front.”

LaFleur didn’t excuse the decision — “I definitely want them making smart decisions,” he said of his quarterbacks — but understands more aggressive throws are common this time of year.

“I think many quarterbacks around the league are going to be more aggressive right now in terms of some of the decisions they’re going to make,” LaFleur said. “Hop did a good job of getting his eyes back, and it’s a gift.”
