One of the greatest rivalries in Tennessee will have an opening-week kickoff.

Maryville and Alcoa, winners of a combined 40 state championships, square off in the latest installment of “The Battle of Pistol Creek” Friday night in Alcoa.

It will be the 97th time the Red Rebels and Tornadoes have squared off in a rivalry that The Sporting News included last year in a story on the top 20 rivalry games in the country. Alcoa won last season’s matchup, 24-17, which was played on Week 10.

Despite last season’s tough loss to Alcoa, the Red Rebels were still able to reach the Class 6A semifinals before falling to Oakland.

It was another championship season for the Tornadoes last season. They won their 10th consecutive state championship by claiming the Class 3A title with a 40-21 win against Westview. Alcoa will move up to 4A this season.
