It is now a two-man race to be the next starting quarterback for Notre Dame football, as Steve Angeli will transfer, leaving CJ Carr and Kenny Minchey to battle it out.
Irish head coach Marcus Freeman met with the media on Wednesday morning, with spring practices officially concluding. Everyone wants to know when Notre Dame will make a decision, and not surprisingly when he opened it up for questions, the quarterbacks were asked about first.
While Freeman wasn’t directly asked when a decision will be made, he went on the explain that they competition between Carr and Minchey will continue through the fall. The goal is to give them as much game-like environments in practice, so that whoever takes the field with the first offensive snaps in the season opener against Miami, they’ll have the “experience” under fire.
There was also a mention of potentially bringing back Tyler Buchner to the room, but that discussion is still ongoing. That’s one of the reasons why I think the Irish will go after a veteran quarterback via the portal, but there haven’t been any developments with one of them yet.
Freeman continued to speak on the topic later, mentioning that there will be only one chosen, and won’t see the competition going past the opener. I do believe that Freeman will make an announcement before the Irish travel to face the Hurricanes, but the battle will continue through fall camp.
