Both Manchester City and Manchester United are said to remain present in the race to sign Paris Saint-Germain and Italy international goalkeeper, Gianluigi Donnarumma this summer.

With City bracing for changes within their goalkeeping ranks, the club’s interest in elite-level names remains active despite progress on domestic recruitment over the course of the last few days in particular.

While a deal to bring James Trafford back from Burnley for around £31 million is expected to be finalised shortly – marking a record fee for a British goalkeeper – City are seemingly continuing to monitor top-tier options should further upheaval occur between the posts.

Ederson, despite strong links with a summer move to Saudi Arabia and interest from Turkish giants Galatasaray, is now increasingly likely to stay at the Etihad Stadium, however Stefan Ortega remains in a more uncertain position.

The German is eager to establish himself as a number one, and with interest from clubs across the Premier League and Bundesliga, a move away from Manchester is seen as plausible even if no negotiations are currently advanced.

Elsewhere in City’s goalkeeping department, the club moved to replace outgoing veteran Scott Carson with Chelsea’s Marcus Bettinelli earlier in the window, offering leadership and homegrown status.

But given the instability in Ortega’s situation and the need for long-term planning, Manchester City have been exploring a range of profiles including FC Porto’s Diogo Costa, Lille’s Lucas Chevalier, and Juventus’ Michele Di Gregorio.

According to the latest information of L’Equipe’s Loic Tanzi, Gianluigi Donnarumma’s contract extension at Paris Saint-Germain has been at a standstill for ‘several months’, and has seen no progress since the end of the summer’s FIFA Club World Cup in the United States.

It is claimed that even prior to the end of the 2024/25 season, the Italian international had already privately discussed the idea of leaving the French capital, with both Manchester United and Manchester City said to be ‘still in the race’ to sign the Italian.

However, from the side of Paris officials, it is stated that they want to first secure the signing of Lille’s Lucas Chevalier before giving the green light for Gianluigi Donnarumma to depart the club in the weeks that remain this summer.

Should City choose to step up their pursuit, the situation surrounding Donnarumma could prove to be one of opportunity rather than necessity. The 26-year-old has long been admired by staff for his presence, shot-stopping ability, and pedigree, and although City are not actively pushing at this stage, they are likely to be keeping close tabs on developments.

Much of City’s next move may depend on Ortega’s final decision. If the German chooses to depart for regular first-team football, City would be most likely to settle for Ederson, James Trafford, and Marcus Bettinelli as their first-team goalkeeping trio.

For now, City will seemingly monitor PSG’s pursuit of Lucas Chevalier with interest, knowing that it could unlock one of the highest-profile goalkeeping opportunities on the European market.
