Man pleads guilty, sentenced to prison for stalking and harassing Fever star Caitlin Clark

A Texas man pleaded guilty and was sentenced to more than 18 months in prison on Monday for stalking and harassing Indiana Fever star Caitlin Clark.

Michael Lewis, a 55-year-old man from Denton, Texas, was arrested in January and charged with felony stalking. Officials said that he had been sending threats and sexually violent messages, among other things to Clark through social media in December and January.

Lewis has been serving time at the Marion County Adult Detention Center since his arrest, and he was granted credit for time served. He was also ordered by the judge to avoid any contact with Clark, to stay away from both Fever and Indiana Pacers games and properties and to not use the internet during his sentence.

“This resolution ensures that the defendant is held accountable for his threatening actions, the fear he instilled, and the disruption he caused,” Marion County Prosecutor Ryan Mears said, via WTHR. “He will now spend the next two and a half years in the Department of Correction and the victim will be able to have peace of mind while focusing on what matters to her.”

Lewis, who made multiple outbursts during his initial court appearance in Indianapolis earlier this year, had to be reprimanded by the judge multiple times on Monday. At one point, according to WTHR, he started to prophesize that the end of the world was coming. The judge, who eventually accepted his guilty plea, recommended that he also receive mental health treatment.

Among other things, Lewis wrote to Clark that he had been “driving around your house 3X a day,” and another that he was “sitting right behind the bench” at a game. Other messages were sexually violent. Police traced the messages back to an Indianapolis hotel and an Indianapolis library via the IP addresses. Lewis later admitted to police that he thought he was in “an imaginary relationship” with Clark.

Clark told police in January that she had been “very fearful” since learning about the messages, and that she had altered her appearance and public schedule because of them. The 23-year-old said she never responded to any of Lewis’ messages or posts.

The incident is similar to one that Dallas Wings rookie Paige Bueckers went through last year. An Oregon man was arrested after stalking and harassing the then-UConn star. That man also pleaded guilty in December, and was given a one-year suspended sentence.

Clark is currently in the middle of her second season in the WNBA. The former Iowa standout is recovering from a groin injury, however, and has no timetable for her return. The Fever hold a 14-12 record heading into Wednesday’s matchup with the Phoenix Mercury.
