Magic Johnson Sends Clear Message After Bobby Wagner's Big Move

Magic Johnson Sends Clear Message After Bobby Wagner’s Big Move originally appeared on Athlon Sports.

Wherever Magic Johnson has gone throughout his life, he has had the Midas touch. The NBA legend won five world championships as a player with the Los Angeles Lakers in the 1980s, and he has also won titles as part-owner of the Los Angeles Dodgers and the WNBA’s Los Angeles Sparks.

A year ago, Johnson, as part of a group headed by billionaire investor Josh Harris, bought the NFL’s Washington Commanders. Washington’s middle linebacker Bobby Wagner is now a part of the Seattle Storm’s ownership group, and Johnson took to X to congratulate him on his new endeavor.

“I would like to congratulate our Washington Commanders star linebacker, Bobby Wagner, on joining the WNBA’s Seattle Storm ownership group,” Johnson wrote. “I am so proud of Bobby! We’ve had so many discussions on entrepreneurship and this is just the start of him building his empire!”

Wagner, 35, is headed toward his 14th season in the NFL and is likely a sure-fire Hall of Famer. He spent his first 10 seasons with the Seattle Seahawks, where he was a big part of their feared “Legion of Boom” defense and won a Super Bowl championship during the 2013 season.

He signed with Washington as a free agent last March, just months after Johnson’s group purchased the team. At the time, the Commanders had been mired in mediocrity for some 30 years, but last season, they advanced to the NFC Championship Game.

Wagner may not be the same player he once was, but he played a sizable role in their success by logging 132 tackles (75 solo), 10 tackles for loss, eight quarterback hits and four passes defended.

Meanwhile, the Storm look like a rising power in the WNBA. They hold a 14-10 record, which is the fourth-best mark in the league, and seven-time All-Star guard Skylar Diggins is still going strong at the age of 34.
