Luis Gil Turns Heads With Announcement Before Angels-Yankees Game

If Luis Gil gets his way, the New York Yankees will have reinforcements coming before they know it.

First, though, Gil must pass the first step of his road back from a lat injury. Gil told ESPN’s Jorge Castillo that he plans to face hitters on Saturday, which the reigning AL Rookie of the Year hasn’t done since the Yankees shut him down in spring training.

The Yankees have not announced an official tentative timetable for Gil’s return. However, a mid-July return sounds realistic, assuming he doesn’t suffer any setbacks in the coming weeks.

Gil went 15-7 with a 3.50 ERA over 29 starts last year, striking out 171 in 151 2/3 innings. However, he walked an MLB-high 77 batters and was one of only three pitchers to issue at least 70 free passes.

Barring any further injuries, Gil will rejoin a Yankees rotation needing another impactful arm. Clarke Schmidt and rookie Will Warren are inconsistent, and there are too many questions surrounding veteran lefty Ryan Yarbrough’s long-term fit.

Former All-Star Marcus Stroman is also due back at some point from a knee injury, though it’s unclear if he’ll start or come out of the bullpen. Stroman turned heads in spring training when he initially declared he wouldn’t be a reliever; injuries to various teammates, including Gil, allowed Stroman to get his wish and start before getting hurt.

The Yankees entered Tuesday at 42-29, with a 2 1/2 game lead over the Tampa Bay Rays in the AL East.
