LSU football coach Brian Kelly talks development of five-star looking for breakout year

LSU football tight end Trey’Dez Green is drawing plenty of hype ahead of the 2025 college football season. Green was a five-star in the class of 2024 — it’s easy to see why. Green, who also starred on the basketball court in high school, stands at 6-foot-7 with elite athleticism. The physical tools are rare.

Green worked into LSU’s rotation last fall, earning 13 catches on 19 targets. He finished the year with 101 yards and four scores. The bulk of that production came in LSU’s bowl win vs. Baylor, when Green got the start after Mason Taylor opted out.

At SEC media days, LSU head coach Brian Kelly was asked what LSU expects from Green this fall.

“Continue his development. As you know, he came on as a true freshman last year, showed his ability clearly, especially in the red zone. We want him to be an every-down tight end,” Kelly said.

LSU wanted to see Green grow as a blocker last year. Just 29.2% of Green’s snaps came from a true tight end alignment. More times than not, Green lined up as a receiver. Among SEC’s tight ends with Green’s target load, only two players lined up in-line less than Green.

“You’ve got to block in line. You’ve got to be physical. Because I think we’ve already seen his gifts as a wide receiving tight end. But now it’s maybe some of the dirty work, if you will, where he’s got to get his hand in the dirt and get after some people at the line of scrimmage,” Kelly said.

Kelly said Green is more physically developed this year.

“He’s more developed. He’s stronger. He’s had a few days where he was dehydrated. It gets a little hot in Louisiana in the summer. But other than that, he has made incredible progress. So we’re looking for him to have a great year for us,” Kelly said.

LSU doesn’t need Green to be elite as a blocker, but if the talented sophomore can even be average run blocking, it allows LSU to make the most of Green’s talents.
