Lamine Yamal Equals Soccer Icon As He Leads FC Barcelona To Title Win

At just 17 years old, Lamine Yamal has already matched Cristiano Ronaldo’s La Liga title haul. The teenage sensation led Barcelona to their 28th league title Sunday, scoring and assisting in a 2-0 win over rivals Espanyol that capped a historic domestic treble.

Yamal scored and assisted in the match against Espanyol and has become a favorite to win the Ballon d’Or ahead of the final games left of the season. This is his second La Liga title with FC Barcelona.

Cristiano Ronaldo’s two La Liga titles show the level of FC Barcelona during that decade. He lost out on the league title six times to FC Barcelona and once to Atletico Madrid.

Yamal has already had a spectacular career so far at only 17 years old. This new league title is among other important trophies. He becomes the first ever player to win two La Liga titles before turning 18.

FC Barcelona’s Trophy Records

This is the club’s 28th league title in Spain, but this season, the club has achieved more than just that. Barcelona won the Copa del Rey and the Spanish Super Cup. They won a domestic treble, but more importantly, the club’s 9th ‘Domestic Double’. 

Post-Match Reactions

Hansi Flick became the first German coach to win La Liga with FC Barcelona. After the final whistle, Flick showed humility after asking his players to celebrate the title win inside.

The German manager spoke after the game and mentioned the respect he wanted towards the opponents after what happened in 2023, when Barcelona won the league at Espanyol.

Hansi Flick: “Espanyol defended very well, and offensively speaking, they attacked us in a very dangerous way. I know what the situation was like two years ago. We wanted to leave the pitch and celebrate inside.”

Real Madrid, the arch rivals of FC Barcelona, showed respect towards the new Spanish champions and congratulated the club on X.

Ballon d’Or Race

After this performance, Lamine Yamal and Raphinha have become the frontrunners to win the Ballon d’Or this year once again. Raphinha’s numbers cannot be ignored, with 34 goals and 25 assists across 55 matches this season. 

Yamal improved his numbers after these past few weeks. After 53 games for Barca this season, he scored 17 goals and provided 25 assists. A player who can compete against Yamal and Raphinha is PSG’s Ousmane Dembele.

Dembele will have the chance to put himself as the sole favorite for the Ballon d’Or if PSG wins the Coupe de France against Stade Reims and the Champions League against Inter Milan in the next two weeks.
