Through the 2024-25 season, the Los Angeles Lakers have had a total of 506 players suit up for them, going back to their days in Minneapolis. Some were forgettable, some were serviceable, some were good and a select few were flat-out legendary.
As the Lakers approach their 80th season of existence (they were founded back in 1946 as the Detroit Gems in the National Basketball League), LeBron Wire is taking a look at each player who has worn their jersey, whether it has been a purple and gold one or the ones they donned back in the Midwest during their early years.
This article will take a look back at Nick Young, a player many Lakers fans will remember.
Young is a local product, as he grew up in Los Angeles. He played three years of college basketball at the University of Southern California, and while there, he was named to the All-Pac-10 first team twice.
He was the No. 16 overall pick in the 2007 NBA Draft by the Washington Wizards. The 6-foot-7 wing spent four and a half seasons with them, half a season with the Los Angeles Clippers and a full season with the Philadelphia 76ers before coming to the Lakers in 2013.
Young, nicknamed “Swaggy P,” played four years with the Purple and Gold. His tenure with them spanned Kobe Bryant’s final injury-riddled seasons and the franchise’s first year after Bryant’s retirement. They were rough years, as the team missed the playoffs in each of Young’s seasons with it, but he didn’t do too badly on a personal level.
As a member of the Lakers, he averaged 13.1 points a game and shot 37.7% from 3-point range. He also provided a viral moment of comic relief in one game when he shot a 3-pointer and celebrated right afterward, only to see that he had missed the shot attempt.
Young left in the summer of 2017 and signed with the Golden State Warriors, with whom he won the NBA championship during the 2017-18 season. He then closed out his time in the league by appearing in four games with the Denver Nuggets during the 2018-19 campaign.
