Week 1 is officially in the books. After a summer full of talking, actual games gave us information on teams across the country. There might be only one data point available but the College Football Playoff picture did begin to form.
ESPN’s Kirk Herbstreit and Rece Davis got a chance to reveal who their top contenders are after Week 1. Starting with Davis, he chose a team that actually lost on Saturday night. Clemson is who Davis picked in the preseason and despite the result against LSU, there will be no change.
“There’s a lot of things I’d like to change about preseason picks,” Davis said during the North Carolina–TCU broadcast. “I still got Clemson winning the national championship.”
Clemson finds itself in a similar position to a year ago. Dabo Swinney‘s squad lost its opener to an SEC team and eventually rallied back to win the ACC and make the College Football Playoff. If there is a difference, Georgia blew out Clemson while the LSU showdown was competitive for four quarters.
Which led to Herbstreit giving the Bayou Bengals some love. Penn State is mentioned in the same breath but Herbstreit, who was calling the game, came away more than impressed. Especially on the defensive end under second-year DC Blake Baker.
“I think I’m going Penn State and LSU in the championship,” Herbstreit said. “LSU — again, you’ve got to stay healthy. But they got a salty defense this year.”
Penn State had a quiet week compared to other CFP contenders. Nevada came to Happy Valley, turning into a comfortable win for the Nittany Lions. We will learn more about James Franklin once the Big Ten portion of the schedule opens up.
Herbstreit likes the “salty defense” down in Baton Rouge, though. Clemson has a ton of proven production back on offense, led by quarterback Cade Klubnik. In a game where OC Garrett Riley could not get the run game going, Klubnik found no such success either. Quite different than what we have seen during Brian Kelly‘s tenure with LSU.
Of course, all of this is subject to change. College football finds a way to produce on a weekly basis, no matter how good the slate is projected to be. The CFP outlook can massively swing all based on one result. But for now, Davis and Herbstreit feel like they have an idea of who will still be standing in January.
