On the Fourth of July, former New York Giants defensive end Jason Pierre-Paul reflected on the fireworks accident that severely damaged his right hand, costing him a finger and the portion of two others.
A decade removed from that accident, Pierre-Paul feels no embarrassment and has become a fireworks safety advocate. He has chosen to use his mistake as an example for others, hoping to prevent them from a similar mishap.
But that’s not all JPP is doing these days.
A year and a half since he took his last NFL snap, Pierre-Paul is staying in shape and working toward a return to football.
“I can still do it,” he told ESPN.
JPP has spent 10 years proving his doubters and skeptics wrong, so why not now? Why not at 36 years old? If that opportunity were to present itself, he’d seize on it and ideally, would prefer it come with the Giants.
“I think that’ll be dope. Tremendous,” Pierre-Paul said. “To go back somewhere where my career started … the fans know me and know the type of player that I am. I’ll always be that type of player and just give ’em everything I got, which I know it’ll be more than enough.”
The Giants are stacked along the edge, but as former general manager Jerry Reese said and current general manager Joe Schoen echoes, “you can never have too many pass rushers.”
JPP back to the Giants would be an intriguing storyline, but as is the case with Odell Beckham Jr., it just seems unlikely.
