Jul. 24—JAMESTOWN — The Jamestown Post 14 Eagles came out on the wrong side of a slugfest in a 9-7 loss to the Dickinson Post 3 Roughriders on Thursday, July 24, at Jack Brown Stadium.
The Roughriders opened the scoring in the top of the first when the runner scored from home before the final out of the inning was recorded to make it 1-0. The Eagles responded in a big way in the bottom of the second when they scored two runs on three hits to take a 2-1 lead.
The Roughriders had a big opportunity to tie or take the lead in the top of the second when they loaded the bases with one out but Camden Kubas lined out to Kale Verke who dove back into second ahead of the runner for an unassisted double play.
After the Eagles were able to score and make it 3-1, Verke had another outstanding play in the bottom of the second when he stole home by leaping over the crouched catcher to push the Eagles’ lead out to 4-1. The Eagles were not done there, adding another run to push the lead out to 5-1.
The Roughriders were able to respond in the top of the third with three runs on three hits and two errors to bring their deficit to within one at 5-4. The visitors kept pushing and tied the game up at five on a sac fly in the fourth inning. The Eagles took advantage of two errors in the bottom of the fourth to score two runs and retake the lead at 7-5.
The scoring continued from there with the Riders once again tying the game up with a two spot in the fifth to make the score 7-7. They did not stop there with two more runs in the sixth to take a 9-7 lead.
On the mound, the Eagles used three pitchers, Zach Gaiser, Adam Sortland and Brenner Weber who combined to pitch all seven innings giving up five earned runs on 10 hits while walking three and striking out six hitters. On the other side, the Roughriders used two pitchers, Nick Sobolik and Will Easum who combined to give up five earned runs on nine hits while striking out seven and walking five hitters.
