Is 4-time All-Pro an option for the Commanders?

Are the Washington Commanders done in free agency? The Commanders feel good about their roster one month before training camp, but there are still some concerns. Did Washington do enough to address its need at edge rusher?

The Commanders want to see the players on their roster in training camp and the preseason before adding a veteran edge rusher such as Von Miller, Matthew Judon, or Za’Darius Smith.

What other positions might Washington be interested in before training camp?

You could make a case that the Commanders need another veteran at safety. Washington lost Jeremy Chinn in free agency and signed Will Harris to replace him. Quan Martin will start at one safety spot, while Percy Butler can fill a number of roles. The Commanders also have Jeremy Reaves and Tyler Owens. It looks like a deep group on paper, but Chinn could prove more challenging to replace than initially thought.

What if Washington had the chance to sign a four-time All-Pro with 32 career interceptions? Earlier this offseason, veteran safety Justin Simmons made his case to join the Commanders. Born in nearby Manassas, Virginia, Simmons has enjoyed an outstanding career, mainly with the Denver Broncos, before spending last season with the Atlanta Falcons. Simmons will enter his 10th NFL season in 2025 and still wants to play.

Cody Benjamin of CBS Sports names the Commanders as one of five teams that are potential destinations for Simmons.

Simmons identified the ascending NFC East contenders as another team he’d be interested in joining earlier this offseason, and it makes sense: Not only is head coach Dan Quinn widely respected for his defensive prowess, but the Commanders could use added experience at safety, with free agent addition Will Harris currently tabbed as the club’s top starter alongside second-year man Quan Martin. If Washington is eyeing a title run, why not consider it?

Simmons would give the Commanders another stable, veteran leader. However, at this stage of his career, is he any better than some of the options already on the roster? That’s the question GM Adam Peters and head coach Dan Quinn must answer. Martin, Harris, Butler, Reaves and Owens all appear to be locks to make the 53-man roster. Reaves is a team leaders and special-teams star, while Owens is a young safety with big-time potential, who already shines on special teams.

While Simmons to Washington makes some sense, it’s unlikely. If the Commanders sign an accomplished veteran, it’s likely to be an edge rusher.
