Pro Football Focus put together its ranking of the top 32 safeties heading into the 2025 NFL season, and not included was the Indianapolis Colts’ Cam Bynum.
Rounding out the bottom five in Zoltan Buday’s top 32 rankings were Tre’Von Moehrig at No. 28, followed by Deshon Elliott, Josh Metellus, Nick Cross, and Coby Bryant.
The addition of Bynum to the Colts‘ secondary provides Lou Anarumo with a versatile presence on the back end–which is a very important element in this defensive scheme–along with a player who’s had very good ball production over his career, which includes five interceptions and 11 pass breakups over the last two seasons.
Bynum has cornerback experience, and those coverage abilities make him someone who is comfortable playing on a deep island. Bynum has also shown to be a sound tackler and capable run defender when tasked with playing closer to the line of scrimmage. This ability to fill a variety of roles will play well in Anarumo’s disguise-heavy defense.
“Another guy that’s got a bunch of different skill sets that can help us,” Anarumo said of Bynum. “He started out as a corner, so he’s got some coverage ability. He’s always been able to take the ball away. He’s been a consistent tackler. He’s super smart. He’s played in a few systems, so he has a good feel for a little bit of everything, just in terms of not one particular defense.”
Cross, who was No. 31 in PFF’s rankings, was one of the bright spots on the Colts’ defense last season. Taking over as the strong safety, Cross was one of the better run defenders at the safety position last season by PFF’s metrics, and his three interceptions were tied for the team lead.
“Cross turned that extended playing time into a solid 70.3 PFF overall grade (28th) and an 80.3 PFF run-defense grade (17th),” wrote Buday.
