Indianapolis Colts announced they released kicker Matt Gay

In a surprise move, the Indianapolis Colts announced that they have released kicker Matt Gay.

Gay still had two years remaining on his original four-year deal that he signed with the team. The move does save the Colts $2.75 million in cap space for the 2025 season, according to Over the Cap.

In his first two seasons with the Colts, Gay has been steady on attempts from under 50 yards, which includes missing only two tries.

However, from over 50 yards, he has struggled mightily. During that same two-year span, Gay is a combined 11-for-22 on such kicks, according to PFF.

Last month, during free agency, the Colts signed Spencer Shrader, who spent 2024 training camp with Indianapolis after signing as an undrafted rookie last April.

After starting for the Colts in Week 1 against Houston while Gay was injured, Shrader was then on and off the practice squad for the first half of the season before landing with Kansas City and then the New York Jets.

In total for his rookie year, Shrader was 9-for-9 on extra points and 5-for-5 on field goals
